Parent Coaching for Busy Moms and Dads

After working with parenting coach, Tessa Stuckey, the family took a walk on beach.

Being a parent is one of the most important jobs you’ll ever have. And yet, it comes with no manual, no “guide-book” and many parents spend a lot of time worrying that they’re doing it wrong. As a therapist and parenting coach, what I want to tell you is that the very fact that you’re asking this question means you’re doing it better than most.  Parenting is hard. When you add things like a pandemic, zoom-school, smartphones and no space/time for yourself or kids that have different levels of challenges, it gets even harder.

The good news is that we can work on these things together to find a better way.

What Does A Parent Coach Do?

A parenting coach helps to transform your family by acting as the bridge between parent(s) and child/teen to help foster a stronger bond and lifelong relationship. Kids and their families come into coaching with a set of challenges they want to address.

Some of those issues are simple to work through and require skills or direction to create healthier habits. Other issues require more intentional thought so the needs of everyone in the family is managed.

I help parents understand what is happening for their kids on the inside. Often kids don’t communicate well (if at all) and this creates a great deal of stress and worry for their parents. When we work together, I help you understand what is behind your child’s anxiety and their behaviors. This allows you to learn the signs and signals about what to worry about and what is really a “kid being a kid”.

From that place, it’s easier to navigate common challenges like “my kid won’t talk to me” or “my kid argues all the time” because you’ll know emotionally what’s underneath their actions.

How Do I Know I Need A Parenting Coach?

Great question. It’s never too late to explore how to improve your relationship with your child.

The most common reasons why clients seek parent coaching from me include:

  • You have constant conflict with your child

  • You are fearful they are isolating too much

  • You have questions about technology and how to manage it with your child

  • You notice a recent change in your child’s behavior and don’t know how to handle it

  • You feel at a loss for how to help your kid with motivation and getting important things done

  • You feel you are repeating yourself with little to no change

  • You feel exhausted, out of control and overwhelmed

But It’s My Kids, Not Me That Needs Coaching. Can You Help Us Both?

Absolutely! With parent coaching, you will learn how to navigate and communicate with your child so you can become supportive and helpful as they mature. The goal of parent coaching is to help improve your child’s emotional wellbeing. The bonus is that it affects the health of the whole family and improves the quality of your entire family system.

I’m Worried It's Too Late To Help My Teen, What Can You Do?

It is never too late. Ever. Of course, it is easier as they are younger, but often teenagers need the support more than anyone. It’s important not to throw your hands up in the air and feel like your child is a lost cause. They are not, and neither are you. When it comes to teens, what I hear from families is that “all of a sudden” something changed. It’s not you, something likely did change. As we work together, I will help you get back on track with your teen so you co-create a strong, mutually respectful relationship that will carry you far into the future together.

What Issues Can You Help Us With?

Teens often have unique challenges related to growing up that expand as their hormones explode and their independence grows.

In addition to the areas above that I help all families with, when it comes to teens, we also address the following issues:

  • How to prepare for the teenage years so you’re ready for what lies ahead.

  • Understanding your teen’s growing sense of self and their need for autonomy.

  • How to give them space, responsibility, and freedom that’s aligned with your values.

  • How to improve your comfort with the changes taking place in your teen.

  • Simplify parenting so it’s not so overwhelming and emotionally draining.

  • How to address conflict and challenges so you reach resolution faster and with greater ease.

  • Understanding how today’s culture impacts your teen’s mental health, safety, and future.

  • Improving your communication strategies so you can talk about difficult topics with mutual respect, empathy, and understanding.

  • How to adjust your parenting style for your teen’s needs and maturity levels as they continue to grow.

  • How to launch your kids from the safety of your home to their college years or next steps in life.

  • Overall improving the bond between you and your teen so you are set up for a lifetime of happiness in your relationship.
